Gustavo Zavala, Antonio’s younger brother, appears as his amateur boxer 18-year-old self about to graduate high school, adjusting to his parents passing away in a touring accident in years prior. Then again at 23-year-old as a professional boxing prospect, then star, who builds his boxing and personal family while attempting to free Antonio from incarceration. Tinoco (pictured above), 21, can play both ages for Gustavo.
Antonio, an aspiring head chef, current line cook and guardian for his younger brother Gustavo after their parents died, appears as his younger, athletic and responsible self at 20, before he punches his boss in the kitchen one day for harassing him, leading him into the criminal justice system. Then as in-shape prisoner five years later, who slowly deteriorates psychologically and physically while locked up. Pena Vega can play both ages.
We meet Ruby once at 18 as she’s curious about boxing ahead of her life’s upcoming academic challenges and struggling with the past having lost her mother to breast cancer. Then five years later at 23 as she reads law to become a lawyer and runs marathons while she takes care of her dad, El Viejo. Barrera can play both ages.
A legendary boxing trainer exiled from the sport when one of his fighters throws a title fight without his knowledge, El Viejo is long retired. A widower, he raises Ruby alone and rejects being disgraced from his life’s work in the ring. Until Gustavo convinces him to come out of retirement and guide him to the championship to secure their independent and mutual legacies. Since he trusts Ruby, and becomes bonded to Gustavo’s good nature in the wake of their boxing relationship, he blesses the love that blossoms between Ruby and Gustavo.
Guerrero is Gustavo’s first boxing promoter. Guerrero knows how to make moves in boxing, but never commits to Gustavo, and only has one more fight on Gustavo’s contract before his star breakout performance. Guerrero loses out by not securing Gustavo’s trust and loses him to another promoter for Gustavo’s title fight.
The promoter for the opposition in Gustavo’s two marquee fights, Miles Burton is the brash, unapologetic, craven id of combat sports. Burton introduces a MMA fighter into boxing for a brazen money grab and in a rare moment, concedes against his better judgement to let the MMA fighter take on a dangerous, relatively new prospect like Gustavo Zavala. Burton returns to halt Zavala’s momentum and offers Zavala a title fight at a higher weight against his top fighter, the controversial “King of Game.”
LYRELL “BIG BANDZ” DENT
“Big Bandz” Dent is a two-division MMA champion who parlays his star power into a controversial reentry into boxing, seven years after he left boxing early in his pro career to become one of the most decorated MMA fighters in history. He disrespects Zavala with Burton as his carnival barker by crashing a press event following Zavala’s first notable win. Dent talks smack in the buildup of the fight and isn’t afraid to fight dirty and inside once the bell rings.
